God gave children minds to develop and use for the good of all. We at Every Child Ministries Uganda believe that education opens the doors for a life that is satisfying to the individual and useful to the families and communities of the nation's future. Education helps an individual achieve maximum usefulness, while also helping them enjoy the wonder of God's creation.
Since children are Uganda's greatest resource, ECM believes that every effort must be made to educate each child as fully as his or her God-given capacity will allow, developing the gifts that are within the child.
Educational Child Sponsorships
ECM presently has five sponsorship centers in Uganda--Kamwokya, Gayaza (Wakiso District), Karamoja (Kampala City), Lwegno and Tegot Atto (Gulu District). At present, 186 children are sponsored. Our sponsorship program includes: payment of all school fees for approved schools, provision of uniforms and educational supplies, and a weekly club meeting which includes health and nutritional issues, educational assistance, a nutritious meal, and a character-building Bible lesson. Sometimes the sponsorship clubs also enjoy field trips and other special activities.
Every Child Ministries is helping this child-headed family get an education.
Youth Reading Room
Our Gayaza sponsorship project has also developed a youth reading room open to children of the community. There the children find interesting books to read, games and other activities, and sometimes, help with homework.
Educational Boost (nonformal education)
Our Tegot Atoo sponsorship project seeks to help war-affected children from the north as they return to school. Working alongside our educational sponsorship program, we offer tutoring and small, informal classes to help young children get ready for school and to help those in school succeed. This "educational boost" is much needed because the children's education and that of their parents before them have been disrupted because of the war. Living in an IDP camp, their experience and exposure to the wider culture has been severely limited. When Universal Primary Education began, many were placed in classes for which they were totally unprepared. ECM aims to work alongside the valiant efforts of local educators and the Uganda Dept. of Education to help children succeed in school.
To that end, we have also worked educational elements even into our Bible programs, emphasizing vocabulary development, etc., along with the character-building lessons. We want to do everything we can to help children succeed in school!
All ECM programs are geared to enhance educational development. Here, after a Bible lesson, the teacher helps the children learn to read.
